Old News - October 2006
31st Oct 06. Absolutely delighted ... to hear that Michael Halliday has extended his Oval contract by two years to the end of season 2008/09. Tremendous news. And to think there was talk of chasin him during the close season!
Halfers winner v Donegal Celtic was Ian Brown who claimed his £450 with ticket no. 3648 after the game ...
29th Oct 06. Glentoran 1 Donegal Celtic 1 - A GAME OF TWO HOOFS!!
Awful, just awful. Still top of the league may-be, but frankly I see no improvement in this side since the first ball was kicked way back in August. Will not do. Remember we went 12 games unbeaten at the start of the League LAST season. Well I'm sorry, but one of these days we're gonna get friggin tanked. There ya go, somebody had to say it, it may as well be me.

27th Oct 06. Donegal Celtic game ... Third time already this season we'll have met the Premier League newcomers, and their second visit to the Oval. Six weeks ago they left East Belfast with a 5-0 drubbing in the CIS Cup, easy enough on the day, but worth remembering just 3 weeks earlier I thought we were very fortunate to come away with a 3-1 win up at their place in the same competition. Premier League business now of course, but while Celtics' priority in this their first season will be to simply avoid the drop, the Glens will be looking to go one better than last term and actually win the Title - 3 points tomorrow are vital if we are to keep up the pressure on the chasing pack. Fair to say most Glens fans will be looking on this one as a 'gimme', Celtic have recorded just one win (2-1 at home to Limavady) from their five League starts, but having said that are unbeaten as yet away from home, sharing the points at both Loughgall and Newry. An injury free squad once again (bar Sas) for the manager to choose from, but more worryingly at this early stage is the number of yellow cards already being picked up, with both Leeper and Willo featuring in the latest IFA disciplinary list and suspended for a single game each from Monday (v Loughgall 4th Nov). Match Betting: Glentoran 2/9, Celtic 9/1, and a draw 9/2. All odds supplied by TOALS.

23rd Oct 06. Brann blow it! Just to keep you up to speed on the Norwegian League situation. There were 3 games left to play yesterday when leaders Rosenborg visited Brann Stadium, with a win for the home side putting both teams level on points with just 2 games remaining ... Rosenborg won 3-1. Brann now trail by 6 with just those 2 games left to play, and have an inferior goal difference of +7 to Rosenborgs +20. Methinks if we win the League you can forget about going back to Bergen next year. Full table HERE
22nd Oct 06. Larne 0 Glentoran 4 - A Gary Hamilton hat-trick and one from Nicky near the death takes the Glens 5 points clear at the top as the next 6 sides in the table all drop points!! 'Results' and 'Table' pages now updated..
21st Oct 06. Larne game ... Haven't been to the last 3 games now with bein away so not really in a position to comment on our recent performances. As to the opposition ... ? Well fair to say Larne have had a fairly low key start to the season thus far. Finishing 3rd and out of the competition in their CIS League Cup group, 4 points from 4 games in the League, and their latest disaster crashing out of the County Antrim Shield 2-0 at home to Carnegie Second Division side Wakehurst last Tuesday! They'll surely want to improve on that latest display, but can't be looking forward to the visit of the Glens on recent history - the last 3 League meetings between the sides at Inver Park resulting in 4-1, 5-0, and 3-1 defeats! Early days in this competition of course, but with 3 of the other top 4 teams in the table also away from home today we have to look on this one as a great opportunity to put some distance between ourselves and some of the challengers. Bar SAS I hear Windy has a full squad at his disposal, that being the case you'd think the bookies weren't far wrong at 4/9. Let's hope so ... onwards and upwards. Bus goes at 1.45pm.
Match Betting: Larne 13/2, Glentoran 4/9, and a draw 13/5. All odds supplied by TOALS.

7th Oct 06. Dungannon Swifts 2 Glentoran 4 ... and Ballymena beat high-flying Crues. Two from Hamilton, Halliday, and a Kyle Neill penalty, a great result, 9 months ago we'd have lost this game. Somebody said we're top of the League :-)
Jody Tolan "I Quit" shock ... HERE
4th Oct 06. Dungannon and Denmark ... This Saturday why not take in 2 games for the price of one and make a real day of it? Ballymac's bus to the Glens v Dungannon game leaves our Wilgar Street clubrooms at 1.30pm, but will be back well in good time for the Denmark v Northern Ireland 7pm kick-off 'LIVE' on our big screen! All visitors are welcome to either or both games, and you can even stay on for the special 'Night at the Races' event in our clubrooms afterwards!!
3rd Oct 06. Glens 1 Portadown 1 AET - 5-4 pens. Weren't even average tonight, like 11 strangers we were. Ball over the top the whole night long looking for Hamilton, no width, no midfield, really hard to watch. That's three games in a row now, because we were no great shakes at Armagh either despite the scoreline. We'll take the result tonight, but this team needs a real sorting out in my opinion or one of these days we're gonna get a real tankin! Mark my words.
CIS Cup Q/Final - Portadown game. Take no notice of Portadowns' somewhat indifferent start to the season, this will be our biggest domestic test thus far - let's see how far we've really come. Be interesting to see how former Ports duo Gary Hamilton an Kyle Neill fair against their former employers too won't it, I know people will say it's only the CIS but there'll be an awful lot of them with more than a passing interest in this one. Looking forward to it immensely. Kick off is 7.45pm. Match Betting: Glentoran 5/6, Portadown 3/1, and a draw 9/4. All odds supplied by TOALS.
County Antrim Shield draw - The Glens have been paired with Bangor in the first round of the County Antrim Shield, the game takes place at the Oval on Monday 16th October with a 7.30pm kick-off.

... and just for anyone who missed it ... Halfers draw v D'gal.Celtic was claimed at the Ballymena game by Clarence Busby, ticket no. 0827 and Clarence won £460. The Ballymena prize was claimed after the game by Roddy Clarke, friend of Glentoran Director Will Carson with ticket no. 1876, and Roddy won £440. It rounded off a nice day for Roddy as his wife just gave birth to a new son Andrew on Saturday morning. Congratulations to them all !!
1st Oct 06. Glentoran 2 Ballymena Utd 0 - Six points out of six and top of the League, delighted of course, but you gotta say that was hard to watch sometimes yesterday. Locky put us one up early into the game then minutes later hit the bar, but after that it was hard to watch. Ballymena were reduced to 10 men shortly after the break when Locky again was brought down by the last man, and Kyle Neill burried the resulting free kick into the top corner of the net to put us 2-0 in front. I have to say that was about as good as it got. Ballymena had their chances yesterday, and Elliott Morris was called upon on more than one occasion. A better team and we could have been in trouble. Still, long way to go and we're winning games, maybe I'm just fussy :-(
